Grants to Support Bosom Buddies of Georgia’sSM Low-Cost Mammogram and Minority Outreach ProgramsGeorgia Cancer Foundation (GCF) was recently awarded two grants totaling $100,000 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta Affiliate. The grants will support GCF affiliate program Bosom Buddies of Georgia, whose Low-Cost Mammogram and Minority Outreach programs will each receive $50,000.
“Grants are critical to our mission, enabling us to offer vital services to Georgia’s cancer community,” said Rudy Morgan, GCF Executive Director. “It’s wonderful to receive such remarkable support from Komen Atlanta.”
Each year, Komen Atlanta awards grants of up to $50,000 to those projects that will have the “greatest impact on the Atlanta community in the areas of breast health education, screening, treatment and support,” according to its web site. Since 1991, Komen Atlanta has invested more than $10 million in grants.
Bosom Buddies’ Low-Cost Mammogram Program contracts with service providers to help medically underserved, low-income women receive the preventative care they need, but often can’t afford. It provides screening and diagnostic mammograms as well as breast ultrasounds to women who are unemployed, uninsured, or have a very high deductible.
Bosom Buddies’ Minority Outreach program offers breast cancer information, resources, and referrals to minority women living throughout Georgia. The statewide effort provides education by way of telephone calls, mail, and email, while sponsoring community outreach events and health fairs.
