Georgia Cancer Foundation Receives $50,000 Gift From Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer for Low Cost Mammogram Program

The Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF) will receive a generous $50,000 gift from the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, race organizers recently announced. Nearly 1,000 walkers participated in the event, held September 29-30 in downtown Atlanta, and it raised more than $1.5 million, the most ever.

Twenty-nine organizations applied for grants from It’s The Journey, Inc., the producer of the 2-Day Walk, and only two, including GCF, received the unrestricted $50,000 gift.

“We are extremely grateful to It’s The Journey and the 2-Day Walk for selecting GCF as a recipient of this amazing gift,” said Rudy Morgan, Executive Director of GCF. “Our low cost mammogram program helps real people get the care they need, and it takes real money to do that. We are very appreciative.”

A major difference between the 2-Day Walk and similar walks is that all money raised stays local, going to Atlanta-based breast cancer support, research, financial assistance, and awareness programs.

Laurel Sybilrud of It’s The Journey said they selected GCF’s Low-Cost Mammogram Program for Medically Underserved Women-Collaboration of Breast Health Organizations to be funded with a gift because it focuses on partnering with other breast health organizations in the community.

“Throughout the state of Georgia, various ethnic/minority groups continue to be severely impacted by breast cancer incidence and mortality. GCF believes that if some barriers to breast cancer screening are removed by adding multiple providers in strategic locations, developing breast health support systems for follow up, and providing transportation, the efforts will be enhanced. Collaboration with other organizations will allow GCF to combat the devastating effects of breast cancer.”

This is the fifth year for the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. More than $4 million has been raised to date and 67 gifts and grants have been awarded to deserving organizations in the metro Atlanta area.
