Free Event Helps Take Terror Out of Diagnosis

On Sunday, November 12, 100 people gathered at the Emory Conference Center to learn about cancer during a free Cancer Town Hall Meeting, Diagnosis Cancer: Why Me? What Now?

“We are thrilled with the turnout of this event,” said Brenda Horne, Executive Director of the Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF), which served as fiscal agent for the meeting. “There was a wealth of information available here today, and I believe that many attendees walked away with tools they will use to better face their cancer journey.”

During the event, attendees were able to view exhibits from local cancer centers, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies; listen to a keynote address by the Rev. Betty Castellani, director of the Cancer Center at DeKalb Medical Center; and participate in a panel discussion consisting of two physicians, a social worker, an oncology nurse, a childhood cancer advocate, and an attorney who addressed health insurance and legal aid issues.

The Cancer Town Hall Meeting was sponsored by the Cancer Survivor Leadership Council of Georgia’s 19 cancer nonprofit organizations that focus on patient advocacy, research, and support. Major sponsors for the event included the Georgia Cancer Coalition, the Atlanta Cancer Care Foundation, and AstraZeneca.
